About The Event
Better Read's Shrinking Globe Book Club is a celebration of translated fiction and collaboration between authors and translators on different sides of the world. This club is ideal for readers who wish to read a more global range of fiction but are not sure where to start or who to start with! The books chosen are amazing stories and this club will set them in the context of globalisation, colonialism, migration, diaspora, historical memory and intergenerational trauma. The club spotlights authors who have and continue to write fiction under oppressive, even authoritarian circumstances whilst also asking what is the responsibility of the translator to ensure the story reaches a wider audience. Ours is a space to share the richness of bilingualism, multilingualism and plurilingualism, going beyond ideas of English as the perfect lingua franca.
Join us on the second Wednesday of each month, upstairs at Better Read Than Dead.
Next meeting: Wednesday February 12, 6.30pm
Reading: Celestial Bodies by Jokha Alharthi.
