About The Book

When white people cry foul it is often people of colour who suffer. White tears have a potency that silences racial minorities. White Tears/Brown Scars blows open the inconvenient truth that when it comes to race, white entitlement is too often masked by victimhood. Never is this more obvious than the dealings between women of colour and white women. What happens when racism and sexism collide? Ruby Hamad provides some confronting answers in this must-read book.

About the Author

Ruby Hamad is a Lebanese-Syrian journalist and author who was raised in Australia. Hamad's work has appeared in Fairfax media, The Guardian, Prospect Magazine, and The New Arab. She is currently a PhD candidate in media and postcolonial studies at the University of New South Wales. She was a contributor to Defiant Daughters (2013).

About the Panel

Antoinette Lattouf is the Director and Co-Founder of Media Diversity Australia. She is a multi award-winning journalist and is currently a senior reporter and presenter at Network 10. Her career spans television, radio and online. She's worked on a range of news and current affairs programs in both commercial and public broadcasting media.

Yumi Stynes is an author and broadcaster who quite likes women's rights and quite dislikes racism. She's been working in media for 20 years and in that time has heard and experienced a fair bit of bullshit. Right now she can be heard nationally on KiiS FM's '3pm Pickup', and hosting the acclaimed women's health podcast 'Ladies, We Need to Talk'. Her most recent book - a guidebook for kids getting their period, co-written with the legendary Dolly Doctor, called Welcome to Your Period, came out on August 1.

Amal Awad is a Sydney-based writer, journalist, public speaker, and author of several books, including Beyond Veiled Clichés: The Real Lives of Arab Women, a work of non-fiction that explores the lives of Arab women both in Australia and in the Arab world. Amal is a regular contributor to SBS Life, and has written for ELLE, Frankie, Daily Life, Sheilas and Junkie. Amal is also a casual producer for ABC Radio National.
